How it works

The formula

Human open rate = raw open rate x (1 - Apple share of opens) - scanner-only opens.

Apple Mail Privacy Protection loads the images in every email it receives, so an Apple Mail open tells you nothing about whether a person read the message. The calculator removes those opens first. It then removes opens fired only by security scanners, the link and attachment checkers that company mail gateways run on incoming mail.

The scanner presets come from Meisa's own data: 1.6 points on sign-in emails, 9.6 points across all email types, and 15.7 points in the heaviest month. With the study defaults the calculator lands within about a point of the human open rate we measured directly.

FAQ

Questions about true open rates

What is a true open rate?

A true open rate is the share of delivered emails that a person actually opened. It removes opens fired by Apple Mail Privacy Protection, which loads images for every email automatically, and by security scanners that check incoming mail before the recipient sees it.

How much does Apple Mail Privacy Protection inflate open rates?

In Meisa's study of 71,602 delivered SaaS emails, Apple's proxy alone accounted for 9.3 points of a 35.0% raw open rate. Together with security scanners, 57.6% of emails counted as opened were never opened by a person.

Where do I find my Apple Mail share of opens?

Most email tools show opens by client or device. Add up the opens from Apple Mail and Apple Mail Privacy Protection and divide by total opens. If your tool does not show it, start with the study default and adjust.

What scanner level should I choose?

Pick Low if your list is mostly people on personal inboxes and the email is something they asked for, like a sign-in code. Pick Typical for a mixed SaaS list. Pick High if many recipients are on company email, where gateways scan every message.

Is the human click rate affected too?

Much less. In the study the raw click rate was 3.23% and the human click rate 3.13%, so clicks are a far more reliable engagement signal than opens.
